The Upsetter is a studio album of Lee "Scratch" Perry productions, released in 1969. The album largely comprises instrumentals from Perry's studio band The Upsetters, but also features vocal tracks by Busty Brown and The Muskyteers (aka the Silvertones). The album was reissued in expanded form on compact disc in 2003. All tracks composed by Lee "Scratch" Perry; except where indicated. Tidal Wave" – The Upsetters. Heat Proof" – The Upsetters. To Love Somebody" (Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb) – Busty Brown.

Lee Perry first began his career for Clement Dodd at Studio One in the early sixties. He soon graduated to supervising the auditions and went on to become involved in the production side of things. Despite scoring a number of hits for Dodd he became unhappy with the financial deal he was getting and moved on, for a short time, to record for . Circa 1968 Perry worked briefly for Joe Gibbs at Amalgamated before starting up his own Upsetter record label (the title is taken from one of Perry's Amalgamated sides). Now fully in control of the direction his work was going in Perry signed.

I Am the Upsetter Lyrics. Why are you so gravelicious, yeah-he-yeah-hy Why are you so covetous, yeah-he-yeah-hy. Everything you want for yourself And you think of no one else Why are you so red-eyed Why can't you satisfy. You take people for fool, yeah-he-yeah-hy And use them as a tool, yeah-he-yeah-hy. But I am the avenger You'll never get away from me I am the upsetter Suffer, you're born to suffer. I told you once to run, yeah-he-yeah-hy But you take it all for fun, yeah-he-yeah-hy.

In 2011, The Upsetter, a documentary film about Perry narrated by Benicio Del Toro, was released worldwide in theaters after its premiere at the 2008 SXSW Film Festival. The film was directed and produced by the American film makers Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough and opened in Los Angeles in March 2011. Perry has recorded an album with Daniel Boyle in London, released in May 2014 as Lee "Scratch" Perry – Back on the Controls Perry remixed the "Thor's Stone" single by UK producer Forest Swords in November 2013. Mad Professor & Lee Perry – Dub Take the Voodoo Out of Reggae (1996). Lee "Scratch" Perry – Technomajikal (1997). Lee "Scratch" Perry – Dub Fire (1998).

If you're looking for that one Lee "Scratch" Perry box that does it all, the first thing you need to come to terms with is that there isn't one. on Perry has been involved with too many labels, been in the reggae business since day one, and is the kind of guy who burns down his own studio with the master tapes still inside (the "vampires" were after him, after all), so don't expect the career-spanner anytime soon

Texts in back cover:

Lee Perry first began his career for Clement Dodd at Studio One in the early sixties. He soon graduated to supervising the auditions and went on to become involved in the production side of things. Despite scoring a number of hits for Dodd he became unhappy with the financial deal he was getting and moved on, for a short time, to record for W.I.R.L. Circa 1968 Perry worked briefly for Joe Gibbs at Amalgamated before starting up his own Upsetter record label (the title is taken from one of Perry's Amalgamated sides).
Now fully in control of the direction his work was going in Perry signed a deal with Trojan in 1969 and the UK Upsetter label was set up as a Trojan subsiduary. The year also saw Perry begin work with Bob Marley and the Wailers, the relationship lasted until 1972 and provided the basic rhythms for a lot of Marley's later work. Throughout this period, and later, Perry used the best available session musicians for his recordings and they were credited with the name of the Upsetters. These early sides are now regarded by many as true classics and they certainly set a very high standard with, perhaps, the most popular of these being "Return Of Django". Although the line up of the Upsetters has changed over the years the same high standard has applied throughout. Perry's innovative production work and his willingness to experiment with rhythms and special effects have consistently led to new ground being broken in the field of reggae and he now has a near cult following of devotees.
It would be impossible to calculate the number of sides that Lee Perry has produced (he doesn't even know himself) but this collection attempts to provide the listener with a representative sampling of the 260 plus tracks that have (so far) been made available in Trojan's current catalogue and, at the same time, provide an introduction to those not yet familiar with his work.
We at Traojan hope you will enjoy this collection and, if you haven't done so yet, we hope you will delve further into the phenomenon of Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
