When I brushed up the history of cantata recordings, I was amazed to see that Werner's versions are among the first recorded ones: they are neither naïve nor specifically old-fashioned. Speaking of the cantatas on this album, Werner's reading of BWV 85 (1959), BWV 182 (1962), BWV 26 (1961), BWV 61 (1961), BWV (1961) are just 2nd recorded versions while Werner's BWV 130 (1961), BWV 8 (1961) are the very first versions of these masterpieces on record. At its best, Werner's conducting of Bach's choral movement is thrilling, as in the famous initial chorale of BWV 8 & Christ, wann werd' ich sterben?'
