True Blue" is an Australian folk song written and performed by singer-songwriter John Williamson. The lyrical content utilises Australian slang heavily, with the title meaning authentically Australian (from a British phrase). The song was released in March 1982 as a single from True Blue - The Best of John Williamson, but failed to chart. The lyrics included a reference to Vegemite, a food paste, but that was removed in a later version because Williamson "just didn't want the song to be commercialised".

John Williamson is best known for the anthem True Blue, a symbol of narrow jingoism to some. But the ‘bush boy’ turned folk singer is an environmentalist, a republican and a deep thinker. Williamson, who has just released his 50th album, has sold in excess of five million. But despite some similarities – an idyllic bush upbringing, reverence toward Henry Lawson, Buddy Williams and Banjo Paterson and also a great respect for the Aboriginal nation – they are very different characters, a generation apart. John 'Willo' Williamson has reluctantly accepted the mantle of Australia's premier folk singer. Williamson is odds-on to rock the boat.

John Williamson is a famous Australian country musician, known mostly for his album ‘Mallee Boy’, which was his nickname since he grew up in a town having the same name. Having been trained to play the ukulele, guitar and harmonica, this talented musician started out by forming a small band in his college. In recent times, the renowned music artiste has issued albums like 'The Absolute Best of John Williamson: 40 Years True Blue', 'The Big Red', 'Honest People'. He also released his autobiography, published by 'Penguin Books' on July 25, 2014.

Many of John Williamson's fans will be aware of the causes he has supported over his long career. He promotes these during his public appearances on stage, radio, television and in the press. John has always been careful to place his patronage on those organisations which reflect his own views, particularly of Australia, its people and its bush heritage together with its flora and fauna. He has supported a number of the organisations listed for a period stretching back well over 20 years
