Zoot’s last session for Pablo and second to last album recorded before his death the following year is a group of mostly 1960s Johnny Mandel ballads. Most of his sidemen are familiar from other Pablo sessions-the only exception might be Victor Feldman, who played on the first Johnny Mandel tribute by the Bill Perkins Quintet in 1966, also titled Quietly There. On that album he played piano, organ and vibes while here he does percussion. Sims opens with Cinnamon And Cloves, a tune that caught the bossa nova spirit of the 1960s. His work with Al Cohn is also noteworthy and worth checking out if you dig Zoot. Quietly There: Zoot Sims Plays Johnny Mandel" is one of his last recordings and is probably one of best places to start with his music in my opinion. You would crazy to not pick this album up. Beautiful heartfelt playing from a master.

Norman Granz's idea to match Zoot Sims' lyrical, swinging tenor sax with Johnny Mandel's equally arresting compositions was a masterful one. Sims' tart, alternately lush and furious solos were wonderfully spotlighted on such tunes as "Cinnamon and Cloves," "Emily" and "Zoot. The six-tune session, recently issued on CD, also contains effective piano solos from Mike Wofford. The date's tour-de-force was its final selection, the wonderful "Low Life," which Sims probed, illuminated and ultimately redefined via his solo.
John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 - March 23, 1985) was an American jazz saxophonist, playing mainly tenor and soprano.

Low Life, Zoot with an obvious reference are other numbers included in the album with Emily following being another of those ballads comprising that Zoot fluid and is the longest composition within the album, running for just under ten minutes and another album highlight. The closing number on the record is the title Quietly There with even more beautiful West Coast sounding jazz and I am sure I am feeling a bit of ocean breeze with this one.
