October is the second studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 12 October 1981 by Island Records, and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album was lyrically inspired by the memberships of Bono, the Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr. in a Christian group called the "Shalom Fellowship", and consequently it contains spiritual and religious themes.

October, originally with the working title of Scarlet, was released in the summer of 1981. In several countries, October was re-issued on 5" CD in March 1996 as part of the Island Master series. UK magazine New Musical Express voted the album N. in its annual poll. October was the most dificult of the three three records I did with them basically because of the well-chronicled story of Bono losing his lyrics during the American tour.
The album October was remastered and released on July 21, 2008 in the UK, with a North American release the following day. At the same time, Boy and War were also released, and a special three-pack was issued in the USA. The remastered versions were issued on 12-inch vinyl, standard format (one disc) and deluxe format (two 5-inch CDs).
October does, however, nearly match its predecessor on several songs. Tomorrow" is a beautiful ballad that gives Bono a chance to show his range, and nods to the band's homeland with its use of yearning Uilleann pipes, while the title track is a spectral, slow song that, unusually for U2, is grounded by a piano. The energy and insistence of the opener is sustained across the album.

October was released on 12 October 1981. Both of the album's two singles preceded the album's release; "Fire" and "Gloria" were released as singles in July and October 1981, respectively. October was the start of U2's vision of the music video as an integral part of the band's creative work, as it was released during a time that MTV was first.
