Burn After Writing Lyrics. Here's to you, the same chords that I stole From a song that I once heard The same melody I borrowed from the void I'd rather observe than structure a narrative The characters are thin The plot does not develop It ends where it begins. It's on the screen, in paperbacks In section 8 and cul-de-sacs Electro haikus and drunk sonnets Are moving me along Along. You cut my hair You left red ink everywhere Do my hands tell a story? Is it boring?
Lyrics to "The Obituaries" song by The Menzingers: We stumbled and stared at the carnival lights that lit up New York City, From a rooftop in Brooklyn. Maybe I'm not dying I'm just living in decaying cities, But I'm still healthy, I'm still fine, I've been spending all my time reading the obituaries. But I will fuck this up, I fucking know it. I will fuck this up, I fucking know it.
Burn After Writing" feels like a sequel to "Time Tables" from Chamberlain Waits, in that the narrator is still missing that girl in the blue dress who got away, still grasping at half-remembered songs, still struggling against the heat. For all the weariness in the words, though, the songs are mighty catchy. Hopefully, "The Obituaries" and "Burn After Writing" are just a taste of what's to come on Impossible Past.

Successor 'Burn After Writing' references the "blue cotton dress" from 2010 track 'Time Tables', while the titular device of 'The Obituaries' is used effectively in conjunction with one of the album's few true shout-along moments. Immersive storytelling is the name of the game here, and the listener is often transported back to a time and place where "American muscle cars" were today's smart-phone, while diner waitresses were anything but ignored. Yet, making such a jump in growth may have been over-ambitious, meaning 'On the Impossible Past' is exactly the album The Menzingers needed to record in the present. What results is another quality release that cannot help but make music fans excited for what this gifted outfit are to bestow upon us on their next offering. Recommended Tracks: The Obituaries, Gates, I Can't Seem To Tell & Casey.
