Crushing is the second studio album by Australian musician Julia Jacklin. It was released in February 2019 under Polyvinyl Record C. Transgressive Records and Liberation Records.

Jacklin is sitting in a coffee shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a bottle of sparkling water, a few weeks after the release of her intimate, introspective new album, Crushing. She adds that it’s a mistake to assume that all her songs are strictly autobiographical: I don’t like talking about whether things are real or not. Either way, the songs speak for themselves. On the opening track, Body, Jacklin repeats, I guess it’s just my life, and it’s just my body over and over in a sea of sadness.

With her evocative, uneasy debut album, Don't Let the Kids Win, singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin found critical and a certain amount of commercial success, reaching the Top 50 of the album chart in her native Australia. The follow-up, Crushing, is also intimate and narrative-based but manages to raise the stakes on intimacy. That's due in large part to the subject matter but also a recording directive to leave in natural sounds like breaths, instrument creaks, and refingering squeaks.

The second full-length album from Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin, Crushing embodies every possible meaning of its title word. It’s an album formed from sheer intensity of feeling, an in-the-moment narrative of heartbreak and infatuation. And with her storytelling centered on bodies and crossed boundaries and smothering closeness, Crushing reveals how our physical experience of the world shapes and sometimes distorts our inner lives.

Listen Closely to Julia Jacklin. Why the singer-songwriter’s new album, ‘Crushing,’ is one of the year’s breakthrough records. Jacklin grew up in the Blue Mountains of Australia, a little west of Sydney, and her songs have some of the droll wit of her countrywoman Courtney Barnett. She sings in a low, sleepy croon that recalls the neo-Patsy Cline stylings of Angel Olsen, or perhaps just an exceptionally melodic yawn. Save for an upbeat rocker or two, her songs proceed at an unhurried pace that is perhaps influenced by the wide open spaces of her upbringing: Trying to get to Melbourne, It’s probably gonna take two days, she sings on Crushing’s smoldering Turn Me Down.

The Australian songwriter felt burnt out and condescended to following the success of her debut album. Growing up in the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney, Julia Jacklin was as drawn to Top 40 pop artists of the early 2000s – think Britney and Avril – as she was to the Billy Bragg and Doris Day records in her parents’ record collection.
