This album plays like someone who just found NIN and is trying to ape the sound. Interference" has several elements that sound very close to NIN's "Closer.

The Cleopatra release is not just a 're-issue'. Notably, it has different mastering (better dynamic range) and where the UK version cross-fades most tracks into each other (or truncates their intro's or outro's) the US version does not. There are 4 'unique' tracks on that version: the 2 bonus mixes, the longer, different mix of Side Effect and the re-recorded version of Right as Rain.

Hate to mention the 'R' word again but REZNOR's influence permeates this music like the pungency of mildew & sweat through a vagrant's Sunday Best suit. But no, don't just dismiss this album as another copyist group cashing in on the man's success - this explores the region first laid bare in "Pretty Hate Machine" - while NIN have collapsed in a vicious self-indulgent universal Fuck-Off, this quaffs from the same wellspring of creativity and does it's muse no disservice. The vocalist, who surprisingly uses few FX to corrupt his words (a cliché which always strikes me as using a heavy amount of spices to hide the taste of bad meat - ok, so it was unusual & interesting half a decade ago but now it's just a boring cop-out for the pseudo-creative). The tones and range of his voice bring JOHN FOXX to mind (and, further inspired by the similarity, I could almost hear trace elements of early ULTRAVOX here - although I'm SURE they'll hate that reference). The songs use one HELL of a lot of hook - "Side Effect" standing out in particular as an almost mantra-like piece driven by the grizzling guitar, the hook burying itself deep, DEEP into you. Other tracks like "Nothing" rely on nothing so tricky to work their way under your skin, the strength of their tone and pure power of the songs enough to keep you coming back for more. "Goods Gone" & "One Angel" are NIN - early KILLING JOKE crossovers, pitched into whirling, slowish-paced prowling rhythms bolstered by intense fiery choruses. Deft production has probably put this album ahead of many in the pack - nothing intended to be heard is lost in the mix, and the sound is often spartan, but always pumping and powerful. Keyboards are used to great effect, very much an integral part of the sound, rather than as decoration laid over the top to separate it from pure Rock. Powerful, colourful and always listenable. I've been sent a lot of good records for review over the years (as well as a lot that, despite myself, I couldn't really get into) but few that I play more than occasionally. This one will rank up in the category of 'Regular Play' which is better recommendation than five stars in some reviewsOriginally reviewed for Soft Watch.
