The cover of this album gives you an idea as to the extent that the psychedelic atmosphere had permeated popular society. Everything got the psychedelic treatment, no matter how far removed the item itself may have been from it. In many cases this was a blatant attempt to exploit that culture for financial gain. In others, it was an absent minded stab at trying to be hip like everyone else. I'm not sure which of those reasons resulted in this cover - perhaps it was a blend of both. Live in Greenwich Village was Albert Ayler’s first recording for Impulse, and is arguably his finest moment, not only for the label, but ever. This double-CD reissue combines both of the Village concerts - documented only partially on previously released LPs - recorded in 1965 and 1966 with two very different groups  . Originally released as ALBERT AYLER IN GREENWICH VILLAGE on Impulse (9155) and ALBERT AYLER: THE VILLAGE CONCERTS on Impulse (9336). Includes original liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Robert Palmer. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson using 20-bit technology at MCA Studios.

Limited vinyl LP repressing of this 1967 album. The other set features trumpeter Donald Ayler, violinist Michel Sampson, Folwell and Henry Grimes on basses and Harris.

During 1967-69 avant-garde innovator Albert Ayler recorded a series of albums for Impulse that started on a high level and gradually declined in quality. This LP, Ayler's first Impulse set, was probably his best for that label.
