Robbie Robertson is the solo debut album by Canadian rock musician Robbie Robertson, released in 1987. Though Robertson has been a professional musician since the late 1950s, notably a founder of and primary songwriter for The Band, this was his first proper solo album. Robbie Robertson won the Juno Award for "Album of the Year", and producers Daniel Lanois and Robertson won the "Producer of the Year" Juno award, both in 1989 (there were no Juno Awards in 1988).

Robbie Robertson is the solo debut album by Robbie Robertson, released in 1987. It won the Juno Award for "Album of the Year", and producers Daniel Lanois and Robertson won the "Producer of the Year" Juno award, both in 1989 (there were no Juno Awards in 1988). The album includes contributions from the members of U2 and Peter Gabriel, both of whom were also working with Lanois at the time. Preliminary discussions and preproduction for Robertson's first solo album began in autumn 1984. The first producer Robertson considered for production of the album was fellow Canadian Daniel Lanois.

As a result, Robbie Robertson is an album that represents both a clear break from his past, and an ambitious attempt to take his fascination with American culture and music in a new and contemporary direction. It's highly ambitious stuff, and the album's ambitions sometimes prove to be its Achilles' heel.

The album won the Juno Award for "Album of the Year", and producers Lanois and Robertson won the "Producer of the Year" Juno award, both in 1989 as there were no Juno Awards held in 1988. The album includes contributions from the members of U2 and Peter Gabriel, both of whom were also working with producer Daniel Lanois at the time. U2 was recording The Joshua Tree and Gabriel was recording So. U2's contribution is heard in the song "Sweet Fire of Love" which is a duet of sorts between Robertson and U2 lead singer Bono.

Robbie Robertson's first solo album sounds remarkably different from his previous work with The Band, due to his teaming up with producer Daniel Lanois (whose ethereal textures bring out a new level of emotion in his music) and members of Peter Gabriel's backing band. Robertson wasn't considered much of a singer during his tenure with The Band, but here he makes up for lost time with a set that's simply majestic. Fallen Angel," with Gabriel, pays tribute to the late Band pianist Richard Manuel, with Band organist Garth Hudson adding keyboard flourishes

Robbie Robertson is a Canadian singer and song-writer. He is best known for his work with The Band. Robertson got his start in music in 1958 in the Toronto area. It wasn’t until 1987 that he would release his first solo album, Robbie Robertson although he had previously scored the movie The Color of Money. Robertson chose to work with Daniel Lanois as a producer on this first album, and Lanois would get U2 involved with the album
