Field music: Swindoners’ pastoral epiphany, finally as nature intende. ever in quite the right place at the right time, XTC might have only ever delivered near-misses, had a miserable experience not thrown up a definitive recording. As Partridge acknowledged, Skylarking may be the only XTC album where Moulding and he seemed to be on a genuine musical par. Regarded by Virgin as the band’s best bet in commercial terms, Moulding’s writing never had the undercurrent of mania, or the excitable twists of Partridge’s, but his weirdly inconsequential non-songwriting – simple, guileless, uncluttered – hits a lifetime-peak here.

Skylarking is the ninth studio album by the English rock band XTC, released 27 October 1986 on Virgin Records. Produced by American musician Todd Rundgren, it is a loose concept album about a nonspecific cycle, such as a day, a year, the seasons, or life. The title was chosen as a double entendre, referring to a type of bird (skylark), as well as the Royal Navy term "skylarking", which means "fooling around"

Moulding did not have "any problem with Todd", instead feeling that Andy was "so unhappy and taking it out, a little bit, on m. Even though the collaboration was "forced", Rundgren says that "it was such a combination of situations. that created, ultimately, an. album that sounds like we were having a great time doing it. And at times we were having a good time.
Skylarking is XTC's eighth studio album, released on October 27, 1986. Considered by many to be their finest album, Skylarking is a "life-in-a-day" semi-concept album which displayed songwriting and arranging heavily influenced by The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks. The title of the album was inspired by Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem To a Skylark and many of the songs expand on the pastoral themes of their 1983 album, Mummer, most notably "Summer's Cauldron" and "Season Cycle".
It may also stand as their like in quality. Skylarking occurs somewhere in the middle of the band’s twelve-album sequence. They released 5 studio albums with a consistent lineup before er Andy Partridge fell victim to debilitating stage fright, which led the band to retire from touring and station themselves in the studio, after which drummer Terry Chambers withdrew his membership. There was a palpable evolution and maturation in XTC’s sound that could be traced to Chamber’s secession, though he had no hand in the songwriting.
