Synchronicity is the fifth and final studio album by the Police, released in the United Kingdom on 17 June 1983. The band's most successful release, the album includes the hit singles "Every Breath You Take", "King of Pain", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and "Synchronicity II". The album's title and much of the material for the songs were inspired by Arthur Koestler's The Roots of Coincidence

STEWART COPELAND talks to The Corpsepaint Show about his book, his bands, The Damned, Mad for the Racket, Topper Headon of The Clash, hardcore.

The Police is a band for whom I have held little regard in the past. Then, two years ago, The Police released a fourth album which borrowed its title from Arthur Koestler's popular tome 'The Ghost In The Machine'. The principal songwriter and front person Sting proclaimed that we were nothing more but spirits in a material world and made a plea for all to rehumanise. Thus began their ascent from the teeny-bopper category.

The Police wrote their epitaph on the heels of six exceedingly productive years. The foundation to their rise, and the quintessential essence that defined the group’s legitimacy was unmatched confidence colliding with advanced musicianship for the pop rock genre

Landlord" and "Dead end job" are wrongly listed as "Next to you" and "No title", respectively. Kids to blame", which is a song Stewart composed for his former band Curved Air, is listed as "Games to Play".

With the exception of "Synchronicity II," which sounds disarmingly like a crappy Billy Idol song, every one of those singles is a classic.

For their fourth album, 1981's Ghost in the Machine, the Police opened up and smoothed down their spiky punk- and reggae-inspired sound, achieving a major commercial breakthrough in the bargain. But as they proved on June 1, 1983, Ghost was just the opening act for the album that would cement the band's status as one of the biggest rock groups on the planet. In fact, by the time Synchronicity – the Police's fifth LP – arrived in stores, it already boasted a hit single.
