When Damien Jurado flashed his new wedding ring during a show in Chicago this past fall, a chorus of "awwww"s seeped from the crowd predictably. One has to wonder, however, if there weren't a few seasoned fans in that audience whose "awwww"s were underscored by "uh-oh"s. The songwriter settling down here is, after all, one of the better chroniclers of heartbreak, betrayal, and the other side of love working at the moment. And while no decent person could wish misery on another just for the sake of song, we've nevertheless seen plenty of talents derailed. The result, 2008 opus Caught in the Trees, features a rock solid outing from backing bandmates Jenna Conrad and Eric Fisher supporting some of Jurado's best songwriting to date- not to mention his most rousing musical offerings since I Break Chairs, all congealing in a manner one can't help but call effortless.

On new album Caught In The Trees, where Jurado continues as a trio with Jenna Conrad and Eric Fisher, there are flashes of exhausted meta-gestures, those hallmarks of nothing-left-to-say. On the tensely chugging Caskets, he mentions wearily that another record is due. And if he’s frustrated with himself for going through the motions, his fans and the press don’t escape censure. Doing away with the meandering fluff of Shadow, Trees Conrad’s pliant harmonies are a great boon. Still, the best songs here put Jurado’s voice at the very center, displaying his tonal range. Amid the twinkling arpeggios and swooning strings of Last Rights, it hovers gracefully near falsetto.
The album preceded Damien's next solo release, dubbed Saint Bartlett, which was released May 25, 2010 and was produced by label mate Richard Swift. After touring the album with Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Jurado began work on his next album. On February 21, 2012 he released his 10th studio album, Maraqopa, his sixth for Secretly Canadian. In January 2014 Jurado released Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son an album which marked the third straight collaboration with producer Richard Swift . Caught In The Trees covers familiar ground, simultaneously bare and flourished, effortless and meticulous, but where Jurado’s lyrics have grown more abstract, still loaded with death, exhaustion, and horse metaphors but, in rarefied form, not really tied to any specific situation or memory, he’s correspondingly spread out his tools.
Album Caught in the Trees. Everything Trying Lyrics. I call you now to tell you I'm thinking of you But it does me no good when the phone is just blocking my view And I would sail back to you And I would sail back to you. And I would come back and admit that it wasn't your fault But I'm tired and unwilling to be the only one who was wrong And I would sail back to you And I would sail back to you And I would sail back to you. I'll be sailing on your deep blue eyes I'll be sailing on your deep blue eyes I'll be sailing on your deep.
