Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir So that every mouth can be fed Poor me, the Israelite, ah. Get up in the morning, slaving for bread, sir So that every mouth can be fed Poor me, the Israelite. My wife and my kids, they pack up and leave me Darling, she said, I was yours to be seen Poor, poor me, the Israelite. Shirt them a-tear up, trousers are go I don't want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde Poor me, the Israelite.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this is the only 'proper' Desmond Dekker album I own (I have a couple collections and his album with The Specials), but for that it's a perfect little bundle of work. Featuring the opening title track, the classic 'Israelites,' as well as other top numbers like 'Rude Boy Train,' 'It Mek' and 'Nincompoop,' this album is largely material written by Dekker himself and producer Leslie Kong
Israelites" is a song written by Desmond Dekker and Leslie Kong that became a hit for Dekker's group, Desmond Dekker & The Aces, peaking in 1969. Although few could understand all the lyrics, the single was the first UK reggae number one and among the first to reach the US top ten (peaking at number 9). It combined the Rastafarian religion with rude boy concerns, to make what has been described as a "timeless masterpiece that knew no boundaries".

I was listening to . radio in 1969 and the song The Israelites was playing when I opened my draft notice from good ole Uncle Sam. Every time I hear it the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I get the chills. That being said, I love the song. Elmer from Westville, OkI first heard "The Israelites" on AFVN radio when I was in the . Army in Vietnam (BienHoa) in 1969. I have to say, I love all of you to death for expressing your individualism in your variety of opinions. Long story, but I'm just saying, I appreciate you. Kirsten from New York, NySeems like there's a tradition of Rastafarians (or is it just Reggae musicians?) comparing their plight to that of the Jews of the Bible. Reminds me of Rivers of Babylon.
