Passport is a German jazz ensemble led by saxophonist Klaus Doldinger. Passport was formed in 1971 as a jazz fusion group, similar to Weather Report. The ensemble's first recording was issued in 1971. The band's membership has had numerous changes over the years. The lineup that brought them to European and international prominence in the mid 1970s consisted of Doldinger, drummer Curt Cress, guitarist/bassist Wolfgang Schmid and keyboardist Kristian Schultze
Passport and some of Doldinger's other output is well worth checking, especially as most of the original LPs are criminally under valued. Personally I think the first 5 Passport LPs are near perfect, particularly if you like sax driven fusion. It is easy to label these as jazz fusion, but there is definitely a funkier edge to them with a definite krautrock feel on some of them. Tracks like Uranus, Schirokko and Yellow Dream most typify the general style and I almost fell off my chair when I heard Jadoo, superb drums on that track. Doldinger is the title of Klaus Doldinger's first Passport album, and many times I've seen this early version of Passport (pre-Looking Thru) described as "a band finding their way" or the music is more "academic". I don't see that myself. Doldinger, aside from Doldinger himself, features a completely different lineup from the one that gave us Looking Thru, Cross-Collateral, Hand Made, and even Igacu (yes, Igacu still featured Doldinger, Kristian Schultze, Curt Cress, and Wolfgang Schmid,.
Passport - Doldinger is a music studio album recording by PASSPORT (Jazz ive Rock) released in 1971 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette. Refered often as Klaus Doldinger's PASSPORT,this German jazz rock group was actually named after Doldinger's eponymous album. Klaus Doldinger was an experienced ist/arranger and in 1971 he released an album with the title ''Passport'' along with his group-mates. Soon this would be the name of his band and the album's title changed.
