The Hungarian Rhapsody N. is one of my favourite pieces of music. However the N. on this CD is actually the orchestral version of Rhapsody N. 2! So, not quite the same. I just thought this might prevent someone else from making the same mistake. 4 people found this helpful.

Les préludes is the third of Franz Liszt's thirteen symphonic poems. It is listed as . 7 in Humphrey Searle's catalogue of Liszt's music. The music is partly based on Liszt's 1844–45 choral cycle Les Quatre Élémens (The Four Elements). Its premiere was in 1854, directed by Liszt himself. The score was published in 1856 by Breitkopf & Härtel, who also published the musical parts in 1865. Les préludes is the earliest example of an orchestral work entitled "symphonic poem".

Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School and leading composers of the early 20th century like Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, taking occasional excursions into the contemporary era with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki.
