Setting Sons is a 1979 album by British band The Jam, their fourth since their debut in 1977. It reached No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart, continuing the commercial (and critical) favour that had begun with their previous album All Mod Cons.

The Jam's Setting Sons was originally planned as a concept album about three childhood friends who, upon meeting after some time apart, discover the different directions in which they've grown apart. Only about half of the songs ended up following the concept due to a rushed recording schedule, but where they do, Paul Weller vividly depicts British life, male relationships, and coming to terms with entry into adulthood.

All songs published by And Son Music except 'Heatwave' Jobette Music Ltd. Original sound recording made by Polydor Ltd. . Matrix, Runout (Side A): POLD 5028 A//1▼ESTR 1 3 2, STRAWBERRY. Matrix, Runout (Side B): POLD 5028 B//4▼ESTR 1 6 1, STRAWBERRY.

Following two successful and critically acclaimed non-LP singles, "Strange Town" and "When You're Young", the band released "The Eton Rifles" in advance of their new album. It became their first top 10, rising to No. 3 on the UK charts. After The Jam split, Weller and Foxton reportedly did not speak to one another for 20 years. However, in June 2006, it was reported that Weller and Foxton met backstage at The Who's Hyde Park concert, and a ten-minute conversation ended with an embrace. Foxton claimed that the two became friends again in 2009 and this led to them. In May 2010, Weller and Foxton appeared together on stage for the first time in 28 years at The Albert Hall in London.

However, ‘Setting Sons’ is a great album in album context and quality, and there are no skip-able tracks present at all. The record is mainly a testament to Paul Weller’s growing songwriting confidence, as inspired by his current reading, he aimed for the ‘dreaded’ concept album. Weller’s concept was of three schoolhood friends growing up together, but parting ways as their political views force them apart – one goes hard right-wing, one goes hard left-wing and one remains neutral. The main problem with Weller’s idea lay in his perennial writer’s block, and he hadn’t written enough songs covering the concept to spread across both sides of vinyl.

One of my all time favourite albums. The Jam at their very best. 2 months ago. Great days. The only album that my dorm at boarding school could agree to listen to whilst going to sleep in 1980. Still sounds good now, although my choices ("Chairs Missing", "Grotesque" and "Unknown Pleasures") were better.
