Mourn’s third full-length, Sorpresa Familia, arrives at the tail end of a professional rough patch for the Catalonian indie quartet. A year before the release of 2016’s stark Ha, Ha, H. the band went public with allegations of mismanagement on the part of their Spanish label, Sones, which Mourn accused of non-payment of income and holding the released album hostage. Since then, both parties have parted ways. Sorpresa Familia (which translates to Surprise Family in Spanish) is the resulting chronicle of the group’s frustration and eventual resolution. The Mourn’s tightest and strongest release to date-is the latest and most aggressive progression in sound for these four very young people (co-vocalists and guitarists Carla Pérez Vas and Jazz Rodríguez Bueno, the band’s oldest members, were born in 1996).

Their Spanish former label, Sones, prevented them from touring or promoting their second album, 2016's Ha, Ha, H. to the fullest - Mourn didn't play any North American shows until 2017, when they settled their issues with Sones. Mourn have always thrown everything they had into their songs and railed against hypocrisy, prejudice, and complacency, but they've never sounded so focused - or furious.
Mourn's album Sorpresa Familia. Two years later, they returned with the equally superb Ha, Ha, He. and proved themselves worthy of the early praise, squashing any remaining questions of fleeting hype . Chock full of tension and pent up frustration, Sorpresa Familia feels tonally right at home within Mourn’s catalog. But it also feels distinctly separate - more refined, more intentional.
Barcelona band MOURN have announced their brand new album Sorpresa Familia as well as sharing a new track to whet our appetite titled ‘Barcelona City Tour’, which can be found below the band’s statement released alongside the news. The new album will be out on June 15th and based on their previous efforts and new track ‘Barcelona City Tour’ we are expecting something truly brilliant. Speaking of the new album, the band’s thrid full-length they said We like to understand records as personal diaries. Everything you live builds you as a person, so we think it builds your art as well
To record their first album, Mourn became a quartet, adding drummer Antonio Postius and bassist Leia Rodríguez (who was just 15 when she joined). The band recorded its self-titled debut album in two days, and Sones released it in September 2014. The following February, Captured Tracks re-released Mourn. Just over a year later, the band returned with Ha, Ha, H. which included songs informed by Throwing Muses, mid-'90s Chicago post-rock, and the poetry of William Blake.
Summary: The third full-length release for the Barcelona-based indie rock quartet was inspired in part by the legal struggles with their former Spanish label to release their second album.
