Through the Darkest Hour employs a simple yet profoundly effective strategy to deliver its doomy goodness upon the listener. The band doesn't screw about with silly things like keys and synths, rather, they let the songwriting do the talking. Solitude Aeturnus’ 3rd full length album is an example of everything going right. It is doom metal perfected, hell it’s metal perfected and I can never get enough of it. Solitude Aeturnus have taken the sound they developed on their first two releases and perfected it.

Solitude Aeturnus : Through the Darkest Hour. Doom Metal, USA (1994 - Roadrunner Records) Dowiedz się więcej. Specters of a somber sullen face Piercing pale dry light of fire Voyeurs in my hour of darkness When is it that they will rest Like kings they come in deepest night A crown of thorns for lack of sight To rule with voices cast in lead Echoing forever in my head". 3. The 8th Day: Mourning. Fold the tension slowly Wait beneath the tear.
Like each Solitude Aeturnus release, these better moments are overwhelmed by vocalist Robert Lowe. Lowe demonstrates good control and a fair amount of melodic invention, but too often his forced articulation of rather pompous lyrics gets in the way of the music. Complicating matters are more than a few uneven mixes, a production problem common to many of this group's recordings. The vocals are mixed much too loudly and, except for the moody "Shattered My Spirit," Lowe's voice seems to occupy a space completely separate from the instruments. Even with all this going against.
Listening to Through the Darkest Hour is like encountering great literature for the first time. It leaves you breathless and reeling in wonderment. This album comes to as close to perfect as possible. The music is both haunting and hypnotic. It is a lament which reminds us of the deplorable condition of mankind and our own terrible plight. This is the third album from Solitude Aeturnus, but the first one I bought. I only wish I'd heard this band long before! First, for perspective, a little about the band itself: Solitude Aeturnus is a "Doom metal" band, so their lyrics are less than optomistic, and the music is for the most part slow and heavy. Black Sabbath is one of their influences, apparently. What sets this band apart from other doom metal bands, in my opinion, is the quality of musicianship and the singer's voice. I'm no expert on doom metal, though.
