Ambrose and his Orchestra were resident at London's May Fair Hotel when these HMV recordings were made in the period 1930-1932. This orchestra, at the time, had few, if any, rivals in terms of arrangements or musicianship. I can never listen to Ambrose's May Fair Hotel Orchestra without marvelling at the stylish and disciplined playing which was way ahead of its time. The tempos are perfect, the arrangements are smooth, sophisticated and clever, and the musicians don't put a foot wrong. In addition there are ten recordings which I don't believe have ever been reissued on LP or CD and these are most welcome; "It Looks Like Love" and "Goodbye To All That" amongst them. I have other versions of "It Looks Like Love" but the Ambrose Orchestra puts all the others in the shade in terms of style and precision. Those Ambrose musicians must have known just how good they were!
