Words is the debut album by American R&B musician Tony Rich (under the moniker "The Tony Rich Project"), released January 16, 1996 on LaFace Records. The album is produced, written, arranged and performed by Rich. In 1997, the album won a Grammy Award for the Best R&B Album. At the start of 1996 with the acoustic R&B ballad, "Nobody Knows", the song was a hit peaking at for 2 weeks, going platinum, and spending almost a year on the Billboard Hot 100 (47 weeks).
Tony Rich's debut album didn't quite fit in with the rigid format of '90s urban R&B. Instead of relying on hip-hop as his foundation, Rich takes elements from soul, blues, pop, and rock, creating a personal brand of new jack R&B. Unlike Prince, his influences are more apparent on the surface, but perhaps that should be expected from a debut. Like many first records, the songs aren't always first-rate, but the best tracks on Words stand head and shoulders above much of Rich's competition.
Words is the debut album by American R&B musician Tony Rich released on January 16, 1996 on LaFace Records. That right there alone shows how creative Tony was, not just his creativeness but his work by being the only person contributing to the album. In 1997, the album also won a Grammy Award for the Best R&B Album. Executive Producer . Label LaFace Records.
The Tony Rich Project.
Tony Rich's little red Corvette is filled with the high-octane fuel of serious, soulful songcraft. Not just any songs, mind you-remarkably smart, clever songs with hummable melodies, lyric twists, turns, and scenarios that, naturally, speak of love, but thankfully do so without resorting to clichés or stating the obvious. You say ya like to travel But you don't even have a ride Say you like walkin' around But your shoes won't fit I like certain people But with wise words to give I'm walkin' down onto the pier And talk to the voice I hear. Chorus Said I be leavin' I'm lookin' for my wings in the sky My journey's long over And my body's tired So when I'm leavin I'll make sure I tell you good-bye I know somebody really loves me But I gotta be leavin'.
