Ain’t That Good News featured a classic Saturday night/Sunday morning structure: side A, uptempo party tunes; side B, ballads and woe. The title track takes a classic gospel song The Soul Stirrers knew and swaps in pop lyrics-the good news coming isn’t the word of God but word that his girl is headed home. He used it to make an album that he envisioned as a declaration of independence but instead became his epitaph. Nothing Cooke did seemed to come hard for him-be it gospel, which he’d sung with The Soul Stirrers before going pop in 1957, or teenage romance like You Send Me, or proto-bangers like Twistin’ the Night Away and Shake that had both white and black kids moving.

Sam Cooke began his career with his siblings in a group called the Singing Children when he was six years old. He first became known as lead singer with the Highway QC's when he was a teenager, having joined the group at the age of 14. During this time, Cooke befriended fellow gospel singer and neighbor Lou Rawls, who sang In 1963 Cooke signed a five-year contract for Allen Klein to manage Kags Music and SAR Records and made him his manager.

Good Times" is a song written and recorded by Sam Cooke, released as single in 1964. Featured musicians are John Ewing (trombone), Edward Hall (drums and percussion), John Pisano (guitar), Clifton White (guitar) and Johnnie Taylor (back-up vocals). In 2011, Nike used the song in a commercial featuring Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant during their "Basketball Never Stops" ad campaign during the 2011 NBA lockout.

Ain't That Good News is the thirteenth and final studio album by American R&B and soul singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, released mid-February 1964, on RCA Victor Records, in both mono and stereo, LPM 2899 and LSP 2899. Recording sessions for the album took place at RCA Victor's Music Center of the World Studio in February and December. 1963 and January 1964. The cover photo was taken by American photographer Wallace Seawell.

Ain’t That Good News (1964) was the last studio album released before he died. Having recently negotiated a new contract with RCA, Cooke had more control in choosing the music he recorded and which backing musicians to use; this control results in one of his most critically acclaimed albums and signaling a more mature direction. Ain’t That Good News includes a mix of Cooke originals and covers, the most popular of which are Another Saturday Night, Good Times, (Ain’t That) Good News, and A Change Is Gonna Come, an anthem for the civil rights movement  . By the time album closer comes on (a cover of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come ) you have been rebirthed by fire and come to worship at the altar of the Queen of Soul.
