About Born to Be Wild. The 1967 Steppenwolf mega-hit. It became doubly famous as the theme song from the classic 1969 counterculture road movie Easy Rider. This made this arguably the most popular song associated with motorcycles. The American-Canadian group’s name is taken from the name of Herman Hesse’s novel. Mars Bonfire, who wrote the song, explains

Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Lookin' for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin' go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space. I like smoke and lightning Heavy metal thunder Racin' with the wind And the feelin' that I'm under Yeah Darlin' go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space.

Born to Be Wild" is a song written by Mars Bonfire and first performed by the band Steppenwolf, The song is often invoked in both popular and counter culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude. It is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song, and the second verse lyric "heavy metal thunder" marks the first use of this term in rock music (although not as a description of a musical style).

Born to Be Wild: A Retrospective was the first attempt at a serious historical overview of Steppenwolf and founder/leader John Kay's career, and considering that the makers limited themselves to two CDs, they did an amazingly good job. A lot of listeners - even those who were around during the band's heyday - who think of Steppenwolf as nothing but successful purveyors of hard rock on the pop charts, may be surprised by what is here.
