Flotation Toy Warning - Bluffer's Guide To The Flight Deck download mp3 album
Flotation Toy Warning - they will come to regret that name - are so intent on shrouding themselves in mystery that it often overshadows the material. Bluffer is by no means a bad record. In fact, it may end up on many a critic's "Best Of" list come December, but for all of their detailed attention to back-story, enigmatic lyrics, and supposed inventiveness, Flotation Toy Warning's full-length debut is surprisingly conservative.
After two acclaimed EPs, FTW’s much-delayed debut album is certainly impressive?but, like the ludicrous Polyphonic Spree, somewhat overstated. Caked in strings, horns, mellotrons and shrieking operatics, nearly every track is epic or stately enough to close most other band’s albums. They even wrap it with clunky trip hop. There are passages of fractured beauty on Losing Carolina; For Drusky and Donald Pleasance, but these are still poor compensations for either songs or trailblazing. Instead, they fall somewhere between Mercury Rev’s billowing drama and Sparklehorse’s witchy atmospherics.
If Flotation Toy Warning is out to lull listeners with sheer melodic excess, perhaps it's working a little too well. Over the course of the band's elegant avant-pop debut, it subjugates effect to ambition, inflating concise pop sound-bites to epic proportions (10 songs in a daunting 72 minutes).

Flotation Toy Warning are a band from somewhere, formed at some point. The first song on the album, ‘Happy 13’, was on a Channel 5 ident from about 2010. The album is bloated to the point of obesity. You can’t say it isn’t lush, though.
