Album · 1955 · 20 Songs. Louis Armstrong’s tribute to stride pianist and vocalist Fats Waller brings the soul. By the time Armstrong was recording for Columbia, in the ’50s, he had a renewed sense of mission, using the LP format to survey great traditions in American song. But cuts that feature the leader more extensively are even better, as with Armstrong’s clarion trumpet playing and blues singing on "Blue Turning Grey Over You". Satch Plays Fats Louis Armstrong.

Louis Armstrong (1901–1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz and in all of American popular music  . In most cases, the number of CD releases listed is limited, with preference given to the label that originally released the album.

It is no wonder that Handy himself cried tears of joy when he heard these recordings. George Avakian who produced both the original recordings and the 1996 reissue on CD, spent about twenty years hunting down the best of the original recordings and takes, before rereleasing this really high quality recording. 6 people found this helpful.

This album compiles a variety of nuggets from the recorded history of Louis Armstrong and his various groups, running from 1929 to 1966. The earlier recordings were made for the OKeh label and the later ones for Columbia or an affiliate. The recordings were made in New York City, Chicago, and Milan, Italy. Cabaret" was recorded in 1966 and featured Tyree Glenn and Buster Bailey. I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling" has Young humming along underneath Armstrong. There's also a rather off-center, tongue-in-cheek instrumental version of "Twelfth Street Rag" from a live Milan performance featuring some gutbucket trombone by Young.

Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His real birth date is August 4, 1901, but some people believe it was July 4, 1900. He was sent to a different family when he was a kid for shooting a pistol in the air on New Years Eve. The family that took care of him was a Jewish family that lived in an area in New Orleans called "The Battlefield" because it was so bad. He had to clean graves and sell coal for money. A member of the family bought him a tin horn.
