Complete your Charles Mingus With Hampton Hawes & Danny Richmond collection. Less Avant Garde than much of his work, there's a bluesy feel throughout with Hampton Hawes swinging strongly, and Mingus' bass often brought to the fore in this small ensemble. Difficult to pick a highlight as this is all decent stuff.

Mingus Three (also referred to as Trio) is an album by American bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus with pianist Hampton Hawes and drummer Dannie Richmond which was recorded in 1957 and first released on the Jubilee label.

Charles Mingus did only four trio appearances on record to my knowledge: this date; the unusual trio with Mingus, Tal Farlow, and leader, vibist Red Norvo; with a very early Paul Bley trio; and "Money Jungle" with Duke Ellington and Max Roach. All were all-star affairs. And this one has the incredibly bluesy pianistics of Hampton Hawes and Mingus' redoubtable long-time stablemate, Dannie "HeartBreaker" Richmond. I stumbled across this album looking for Hampton Hawes' tracks. Since I am also a huge Mingus fan I was surprised that I had not come across it before. Basically, this collaboration is interesting from the arrangements and the chemistry among Hawes on one side and Mingus-Richmond on the other. There always was a telepathy between Mingus and Richmond, but on this album it seems to have extended to Hawes.

Charles Mingus is the volcanic, inflammably honest bass virtuoso, composer and Jazz Workshop leader whose strength of musical personality has made his playing and writing instantly identifiable, however intermittently controversial. The meeting of the two in this album is provocative, all the more so because both - health and wars willing - have the major section of their futures ahead of them. Hawes continues to move in the main road; Mingus, having absorbed the map, backwards and to the present, of the main route, is striking out on his own path.
