For the rally co-driver, see Mike Doughty (co-driver). Doughty broke up Soul Coughing in 2000 due to personal problems: He was wearying of the band, and he was addicted to opiate painkillers, heroin, and alcohol. He was promptly dropped by Warner Brothers, and began traveling in a rental car (covering 9,000 miles on his first tour) playing acoustic shows. Matthews eventually released the album on his ATO label as Haughty Melodic (an anagram for 'Michael Doughty'. Haughty Melodic's singles "Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well" and "I Hear the Bells" were featured on episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Veronica Mars, respectively, and Doughty appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, marking a return to the musical mainstream.
Album · 2005 · 12 Songs. After releasing recordings primarily of acoustic guitar and voice, Mike Doughty teamed up with Semisonic’s Dan Wilson to record an album that gave his songs a commercial sheen and the chance to land on "alternative" radio stations, or whatever outlets were playing poppy, literate music in 2005. Signing to Dave Matthews’ ATO Records gave Doughty further visibility, though it’d be interesting to hear what fans of Matthews’ collegiate jam rock thought of songs with such a deep sarcastic streak
Haughty Melodic is Mike Doughty's first album with a full band since his days fronting Soul Coughing. It's also his first LP of original material since signing to ATO records (part of label owner Dave Matthews' earnest attempt at a monopoly on round-headed white guys who sing like muppets). Doughty's recent solo work has been mostly acoustic singer/songwriter stuff, but Haughty Melodic isn't so intimate- picture last year's re-released Skittish backed by the Dave Matthews band, and you'll have a good idea of what this record sounds like
