For me the best album this year was Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana. Byline? 40. Teyana Taylor. I got a man, but ain’t got no manners," cracks Teyana Taylor on . opener 'No Manners' - a smart, swift assertion of her unwavering sex positivity. Invasion of Privacy is full of sneering street rap ('Bartier Cardi', 'She Bad'), loopy trap ('Drip'), romantic malaise ('Be Careful', 'Ring'), and the snarliest song to ever mention read receipts ('I Do').
Inner Monologue Pt. I is the first part of Michaels' first full length studio album with Republic Records. The third album by Jack and Meg White was the right dynamite for a mainstream breakthrough. Jack’s Delta-roadhouse fantasies, Detroit-garage-rock razzle and busted-love lyricism, as well as Meg’s toy-thunder drumming all peaked at once. Hits such as Crosscut Saw and Laundromat Blues earned King a new rock & roll audience.
Like the album itself, the art for 2004’s American Idiot is hardly subtle. A heart-shaped hand grenade, bleeding and designed to mimic Communist propaganda, was an integral part of Green Day’s angsty tribute to the nation’s post-9/11 political turmoil. 003. 051. 49. Taylor Swift, '1989' (2014). Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album 1989 was a departure for the singer, so it only makes sense that the cover broke with tradition as well. Shaped as a Polaroid photo from the era, Swift’s face is cut off, highlighting an '80s sweatshirt while evoking memories of a different time.
By album seven, the life-cycle of most bands would dictate stagnation, or at least a move towards more mature themes. It was the most body-focused music of Sleater-Kinney’s career, but it didn’t come at the expense of the head: Modern Girl coats the emptiness of consumer culture in sugary melody, Entertain disses merchants of mediocre art, Jumpers offers sympathy for a suicide. It would be the band’s last album (not forever, let’s hope). Listen: Sleater-Kinney: Modern Girl.
