Smile (stylized as SMiLE) is an unfinished album by American rock band the Beach Boys that was projected to follow their 11th studio album, Pet Sounds (1966). After bandleader and principal songwriter Brian Wilson abandoned over fifty hours of music recorded over a ten-month period with outside lyricist Van Dyke Parks, the band substituted its release with Smiley Smile (1967), an album containing stripped-down remakes of some Smile material.

To clarify much confusion: Smiley Smile is an entirely different piece of work than Smile would have been, although some material that ended up on Smiley Smile would have most likely been used on Smile. Also, much of Smiley Smile was in fact recorded after the Smile sessions had ceased. For fans expecting something along the lines of Sgt. Pepper's (and there were many of them), Smiley Smile was a major disappointment, replacing psychedelic experimentation with spare, eccentric miniatures

Smiley Smile is a near-masterpiece. Without any awareness of Smile's existence, this album could have been a contemporary classic. Remnants of the vignette style are still there, along with a sense of humor both musical and lyrical. Group harmonies shine just as beautifully as any on Pet Sounds, and although the album isn't anywhere close to the sonic revolution that Sgt. Pepper had already brought, Wilson's innovative production and arrangements still bring out the best in every single track  . Back to 1967, on the day the Beach Boys recorded the bare and light-hearted "Vegetables," another track written for Smile: Paul McCartney decided to drop by the studio. He can be heard chewing vegetables for the track's only percussion. And, as Al Jardine recalls, McCartney and Wilson could be seen together behind the console at one point, and McCartney even ventured to play Wilson the just-finished "A Day in the Life" before Sgt Pepper was even released.

Smiley Smile disappointed fans and critics at the time, who were expecting a sort of answer record to The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's. It did include "Good Vibrations", which had been a single the previous year. Once Wilson came to grips with the fact that his masterwork wasn't coming together, he and The Beach Boys put together this truly weird and charming album at Wilson's home, where the equipment wasn't yet up to professional recording studio standards. The resulting set is low-key, even lo-fi in many spots. Smiley Smile disappointed fans and critics at the time, who were expecting a sort of answer record to The Beatles' Sgt.

Smiley Smile always bothered me as a fan. I knew it was the bastard son of SMiLE, and the muffled sound didn't help. The album was sold as Stereo in 1967. The problem, like Wild Honey is it wasn't real stereo. It was Duophonic sold as stereo. With the release of a proper stereo version, I have changed my tune about the album. Mark Linnett has remastered Smiley Smile into a hi-fi, great sounding followup to Pet Sounds. Now I can hear things I never noticed before. The album was a cobbled-together, last-minute replacement for the scrapped SM!LE album

Produced by The Beach Boys. If you brought a big brown bag of them home I'd jump up and down and hope you'd toss me a carrot. I tried to kick the ball but my tennie flew right off I'm red as a beet cause I'm so embarassed. Sometimes titled Vege-tables, this song was recorded in April, 1967 for the never-finished Smile album, but was released later that year on Smiley Smile. Paul McCartney can be heard in the background of the tune chomping on celery.
