Walls (Album) by Apparat, released 25 May 2007 1. Not A Number 2. Hailin From The Edge 3. Useless Information 4. Limelight 5. Holdon 6. Fractales Pt. 1 7. 2 8. Birds 9. Arcadia - Album Version 10. You Don't Know Me 11. Headup 1. And somewhere, in between all those activities, he managed to record Walls, his first solo studio album since 2003's Duplex. Despite its title, Walls isn't about dividing lines. Instead, it describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle and roam free: strings and mallet instruments; rock guitar and gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion and muscular studio drumming.

Whatever the secret is, Berlin's Sascha Ring, aka Apparat, seems to be aiming for it. The weird thing is, though, that he seems a much more likely candidate when he's not trying. In and around the few dutiful pop tracks on Walls, his third full-length, Ring has made one of the best electronic dream-pop records in a while, somewhere in the tradition of M83, Slowdive, Junior Boys, Schneider TM, and every other act to trip out on dense, blissy echoes and thinky, under-the-covers slowness- not the kind of. album that asks for your attention, but the kind that seduces you into it.

Are those violins I hear at the start of Apparat's Walls ? Indeed, the album as a whole is a step forward from Duplex, more complex and more emotionally charged. The violins that introduced "Not a Number" recur on "Useless Information," accompanied with some new friends. The dark and funky "Hailin from the Edge" and the icy grooves of "Holdon" both benefit from Raz Ohara's terse vocals. I cannot believe how good this album is. "Arcadia" is one of my fave tracks of the last 5 years, and there are so many other things to recommend from this album. A nice mix of instrumental and vocal tracks to avoid any potential monotony.

Having made a considerable splash with the Ellen Allien collaboration Orchestra of Bubbles, Apparat returned to his own path with Walls, a remarkable album that ranks as his best yet. Beginning with the gentle string and vibes beats of "Not a Number" - which in its own melancholy way, combined with the title, suddenly sounds like one of the most humanistic songs yet recorded, passionate in its elegant sorrow - Walls takes a simultaneously familiar and unsettled path.

Apparat - Walls Shitkatapult co-owner and Berliner Sascha Ring insists that ‘Walls’, the title of his first solo studio album since 2003’s ‘Duplex’ does not imply dividing lines, but protective spaces. Too much so, perhaps. Walls’ is pop by any other means with an overall current of well-being and good intentions that never seems to escape Sascha Ring’s carefully marked middle ground, sonically or thematically. There are no dangerous, passionate or precious emotions, despite all the best intentions

Walls is Apparat's fourth release, and despite its association with the Berlin electronic scene and its placement on the Shitkatapult label, it's a highly melodic, rarely minimal (despite its influences) album. Layering melodies on top of melodies on top of more melodies, using just the right amount of percussion, and adding vocals when the instruments just aren't enough, Apparat displays a beautiful sense of balance within its music. This balance keeps the pop from sounding too mainstream, the melody lines from getting too sugary, and the percussion from dominating the mix.
