About Born to Be Wild. The 1967 Steppenwolf mega-hit. It became doubly famous as the theme song from the classic 1969 counterculture road movie Easy Rider. This made this arguably the most popular song associated with motorcycles. The American-Canadian group’s name is taken from the name of Herman Hesse’s novel. Mars Bonfire, who wrote the song, explains: I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day and saw a poster in a window saying ‘Born to Ride’ with a picture of a motorcycle erupting out of the earth like a volcano with all this fire around it. Around this time I had just purchased.

Born to Be Wild" is a song written by Mars Bonfire and first performed by the band Steppenwolf, The song is often invoked in both popular and counter culture to denote a biker appearance or attitude. It is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song, and the second verse lyric "heavy metal thunder" marks the first use of this term in rock music (although not as a description of a musical style).

Luckily, it stood out for Steppenwolf. This was the second single from Steppenwolf's first album. The first single, "Sookie Sookie," was a flop. Six years Steppenwolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’, recorded in 1967 and released in 1968 on their first long playing record, Steppenwolf, contained the famous lyric I like smoke and lightnin’, heavy metal thunder. And ‘Born to Be Wild’ was one of the first songs they cut, and interestingly it was not one written by any member of the band. Much of the success of the album is down to ‘Born to Be Wild’ and ‘The Pusher’ being being featured in the 1969 movie, Easy Rider. Steppenwolf was originally released on 29 January 1968 and it entered the Billboard chart on 9 March, the same year.
