While not a terribly listenable album, the tracks that have beats are excellent and the ones that don't keep you guessing. The six-table "BBC Radio 3" gets tedious but it's courteously nestled at the end of the album, where only the truly strong dare tread. Don't bother if you're looking for drum-n-bass, though. Oddities is often beatless and would be more of a frustration than pleasure.
It's also Spring Heel Jack's best album. It's no surprise that the album draws comparisons to John Barry film scores, as Spring Heel Jack seems to consist of card-carrying members of a 007 fan club, but they pull out all the stops here, producing muscular spy movie music that seems extracted from Hades itself. Devastating, bleak, and intensely powerful melodies wail and storm, jazzy fuzz-box jungle notes twist in the air, and trumpets seem to assert that the forces of darkness have been let loose.

ODDITIES is a perfect name for this Spring Heel Jack disc. Not only are these rare and hard-to-find recordings; they'realso some of the more extreme excursions members Coxon and Wales have recorded. There's nothing here that could be considered jungle or drum-and-bass; instead, SHJ's penchant for dense, dissonant textures and 20th century classical music, previously only hinted at, is brought completely to the fore. The only steady rhythm to be found is on the album's opening track, a fuzzy conglomeration of nested guitar loops and keyboard samples. This is a consistently interesting album, if not always a completely enjoyable one. - -All Music Guide. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample).

Spring Heel Jack eschew the rhythmic patterns of the Material production in favour of a sympathetically eery ambience threaded with saxophone notes, stately piano chords and occasional vibes in a sympathetic treatment. Trouble" continues the dark atmosphere with what sounds like threatening fireworkson a dark night. Oddities reveals a rich, dark seam of possibilities.
