Germfree Adolescents is the debut album of English punk rock band X-Ray Spex. It contained the UK hit singles "The Day the World Turned Dayglo" (No. 23 in April 1978), "Identity" (No. 24 in July 1978) and "Germ Free Adolescents" which reached No. 18 in November 1978. Germfree Adolescents received wide acclaim upon its release.
So, too, was X-Ray Spexs debut album, Germ Free Adolescents, which was great in spite of "Oh Bondage" not being on it. The songs were guitar-driven punk-pop that combined outrage and aggression with a sense of alienation and disenfranchisement about rampant commerciality and an increasingly sterile and artificial world. And that was it from X-Ray Spex. Like all the best punk bands, they burned brightly but not for long.
When sounding off the first classics that came to be of punk, especially ones led and forged by women, Germfree Adolescents by X-Ray Spex stands as a bit of an oddity. Never as blatantly discordant as Crass, and musically much more muscular than The Slits, the Spex carved one near-perfect album of artful revolt, a rough and turbulent lament of social inequity in the metropolis. Vexed, stylishly raw and supremely agile, there isn’t a record like it out there.
Germfree Adolescents is the blistering debut album by X-Ray Spex. Released November 10, 1978, X-Ray Spex released their album chocked full with some of their previously released singles, such as Day the World Turned Day-Glo, Identity, and Germfree Adolescents, which peaked at 23, 24, and 18 respectively on the UK Hit Singles chart. Germfree Adolescents features a change in the band’s roster, with saxophone player Lora Logic being subbed out for Ted Bunting, apparently because lead singer Poly Styrene just wanted some men that would blur into the background, according to Lora Logic
