Gwendoline Florence Catley (9 February 1906 – 12 November 1996) was an English coloratura soprano who sang in opera, concert and revues. She often sang on radio and television, and made numerous recordings of songs and arias, mostly in English. She was renowned for the clarity and agility of her voice particularly in florid parts, and her English diction was outstanding.
The Fair Maid Of Perth: Sweet Echo. 11. Dinorah: Ombra Leggiera. 12. Tales Of Hoffmann: The Doll's Song. 13. Die Fledermaus: Laughing Song. 14. Voices Of Spring. 15. The Pretty Mocking Bird. 16. Lo, Here The Gentle Lark. 18. Nightingale And Rose. 19. Virgin's Slumber Song. Gwen Catley was my mother's favourite singer and I grew up hearing two of her songs regularly. Now I have my own collection on one disk.
Gwen Catley is salutary to hear as well as delightful. The staccato scales of Sempre libera, for instance: you won’t catch Sembrich or Melba, Tetrazzini or Galli-Curci bothering about those. La) Jolie fille de Perth, '(The) Fair Maid of Per, Echo, viens sur l'air embaumé. Georges Bizet Composer. Stanford Robinson Conductor. London Symphony Orchestra. Certainly it is delightful to have the unforced gaiety of Adele’s laughter in Die Fledermaus and the easeful virtuosity of Saint-Saens’s nightingale in the wordless solo from his incidental music to Parysatis. Bishop’s lark is welcome; not so the other part of his aviary. To kill a mocking-bird!
Gwendoline Florence Catley (9 February 1906 – 12 November 1996) was an English coloratura soprano who sang in opera, concert and revues. Catley was born in London in 1906. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music, where her chief singing teacher was the tenor Walter Hyde. Her other teachers included Sir Granville Bantock, Jenny Hyman and, privately, Julian Kimbell. In World War II she sang for a year in Jack Hylton's revue Hi-de-Hi, where she was famed for her performances of "Caro nome" from Verdi's Rigoletto. She also sang Gilda with the Carl Rosa Opera Company during the war. In 1949 she sang Catherine Glover in a BBC studio broadcast of Bizet's The Fair Maid of Perth, with Richard Lewis as Henry Smith and conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham.

When Romeo and his buddies crash the Capulet party, he spies upon the beautiful young Juliet. He is instantly smitten. Here's what he has to say while he gazes from afar. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she: Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. It is my lady, O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were!
Shakespeare homepage Romeo and Juliet Act 1, Prologue Next scene. Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; Whose misadventured piteous overthrows Do with their death bury their parents' strife
ROMEO Neither, fair saint, if either thee dislike. JULIET How camest thou hither, tell me, and wherefore? The orchard walls are high and hard to climb, And the place death, considering who thou art, If any of my kinsmen find thee here. Although the balcony has become a representative feature of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare almost certainly didn’t have one in any of his productions. The balcony can instead be attributed to: Otway’s 1679 play, The History and Fall of Caius Marius, which grafts dialogue, characters, and plot from Romeo and Juliet onto an ancient Roman military and political struggle drawn from Plutarch.
