Jay Farrar – tgrottoslack. Label: Transmit Sound – ARR20161. This very limited, hand-numbered release comes on white vinyl featuring Gillian Welch and members of the Flaming Lips and Superchunk. The double LP also features the 5-track EP never before released on vinyl, k. Released in gatefold sleeve.
Jay Farrar’s first solo album, underappreciated in part due to limited exposure, was released on Artemis Records. Much of the material departs from the twang of his work with Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo, with a notable exception of the haunting and curious Barstow, featuring the harmony vocals of Americana superstar Gillian Welch.

Jay Farrar's Sebastopol was easily among the finest rock releases of 2001, an eclectic showcase of the Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt founder's rough and smoky voice, willfully obscure lyrics, slow-churning rhythms, and petulant melodies. It should be noted that ck" contains only five songs and a mere thirteen minutes of music. The songs were all recorded during the sessions for Farrar's "Sebastopol" album (including a remix of "Damn Shame"). If you like "Sebastopol," there's no reason to think you won't like what little is included here.
Jay Farrar has been on a long losing streak. It's been nearly a decade since his genre-defining band Uncle. He put Son Volt on hold (possibly for good) and released an album under his own name for the first time. Sebastopol was a good idea in theory; all but the most hardcore Farrar apologists had to admit it was time for a change, and Farrar did, in fact, seem a bit rejuvenated by the sessions. The only problem was with the songs themselves. It's as though he thought simply changing his cast would solve the problem- that he could continue get by on writing the exact same songs he's been writing all along. In hindsight, the album comes off as a missed opportunity at a fresh start.
View All. Sebastopol.
Jay Farrar gets funky? Hard to imagine, but it actually happens on k, an EP of unreleased material the Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo alumnus has released, presumably while he contemplates his next move. up to that album's level of quality, especially the piano-driven "Station to Station.
