Symphony 4 Franck Psyche Eduard van Beinum Decca JPN. Made in Japan.
The Symphonic Variations (Variations symphoniques), M. 46, is a work for piano and orchestra written in 1885 by César Franck. It has been described as "one of Franck's tightest and most finished works", "a superb blending of piano and orchestra", and "a flawless work and as near perfection as a human composer can hope to get in a work of this nature". It is a fine example of Franck's use of cyclic unity, with one theme growing into various others
There is some distortion at the beginning of many of the works that seems to disappear or become inconsequential in the face of the quality of the performances with so many moments illuminating things I'd not noticed before. The sound is good for historical recordings and never really bothers me that much.

Eduard van Beinum began his conducting career by leading several amateur choirs and orchestras, after which he was appointed conductor of the Haarlem Orchestral Society, where he remained for four years. During this time he learned repertory, not only standard orchestral works, but music of contemporary composers, an interest that continued throughout his entire career.
