Album · 2017 · 12 Songs. It’s a gift to hear the great pianist András Schiff perform as a chamber musician. And, as expected, he and Shiokawa work in glorious tandem. Their Bach is radiant, contrapuntal voices carefully considered, the charming second movement allegro a trio sonata of sublime proportions. The Busoni is a dark, mysterious work, yet these two musicians shine a way through its depths with playing of utter clarity that still maintains its sense of Romantic abandon. Perhaps the highlight, however, is the sublime adagio from Beethoven’s Sonata no. 10-six minutes of unalloyed rapture.

Yuuko Shiokawa and András Schiff are heard here in an insightful – and delightful - programme of sonatas for violin and piano which begins with Bach’s Sonata N. in E major, ends with Beethoven’s Sonata N. 0 in G major, and has at its centre Busoni’s Sonata No. 2 in E minor. No other 20th century composer was as deeply steeped in the music of Bach as Ferruccio Busoni, and his second sonata, published in 1901, is indebted to both Bach and Beethoven. Since 2004 he has performed complete cycles of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas worldwide and the cycle in the Tonhalle Zurich was recorded live for ECM New Series. His recordings of works by Schubert, Schumann, Janáček, Beethoven and Bach, have been released to the highest of critical acclaim. In 2016 ECM released Encores after Beethoven: a collection of encores performed after his Beethoven Cycle programs.

Complete Music for Piano. has been added to your Cart. Violin Sonatas (Bach, Beethoven, Busoni). For many years I said that the best recording in my entire collection was the version of the Beethoven sonatas for cello and piano. This terrific recording is its equal, or it may even be better. Andras Schiff needs no introduction for any piano afficianado and Miklos Perenyi is a first rate cellist who may not have as many recordings as the average big name cellist. Perenyi (appparently pronounced pear-Yen-skyi) - who was a student of Casals - first came to my attention in a film about the life of Franz Josef Haydn.

Yuuko Shiokawa and András Schiff are heard here in an insightful and delightful - program of sonatas for violin and piano which begins with Bachs Sonata N. in E major, ends with Beethovens Sonata N. 0 in G major, and has at its center Busonis Sonata No. Their n program was recorded in Luganos Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in December 2016, and produced by Manfred Eicher. Tracklist: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750).

Hungarian Andras Schiff has been working up to his complete recording of the Beethoven sonatas for a number of years. Having surveyed a goodly number of Beethoven's piano sonatas for Decca in the 1980s and 1990s, Schiff returned to and plowed through all of the sonatas in a series of live performances which were recorded. There is precedence for this musical double duty in Schiff's reconsideration of Bach's Goldberg Variations for ECM (2001) ten years after his 1990 set on Decca. The complexity and the improv mean that I never hear the same cut on an album or live performance of a piece the same way twice and it works my mind, body and soul. I love jazz because it speaks to my soul and never disappoints.
