THE BEATLES - WHITE ALBUM OVERVIEW: In November 1968, millions of double LPs were shipped to record stores worldwide ahead of that tumultuous year’s most anticipated music event: the November 22nd release of The BEATLES (soon to be better known as ‘The White Album’). The Beatles, otherwise known as The White Album, is the Fab Four’s eponymous ninth studio album. It followed the critically-divisive Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack, which resulted in the band’s extended retreat to India. Their much-publicized visit to the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s compound managed to inspire some fresh material for the group, but it also found the Beatles disenfranchised and in conflict with one another
The White Album plays like an anthology; each Beatle wrote songs that were then accompanied by some or all of the others. The album’s variety is its own statement of purpose, extending the Sgt. Pepper idea that the Beatles’ music was no longer bound by format, era or style. The songs confidently acknowledge and parody influences and peers: blues, country, doo-wop, parlor songs, 1920s jazz, psychedelia, musique concrete, orchestral easy listening, Baroque harpsichord, bossa nova, Jamaican bluebeat, English brass bands, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys. The original mixes on Beatles LPs often placed instruments and voices off-center, making the two stereo channels sound very different. The 2018 mixes often move lead vocals and key instrumental parts toward the center, more conventionally. But each song has new idiosyncrasies of its own.
The Beatles' "White Album" (the name was really "The Beatles") is a big, sprawling, messy mix of experiments, stripped down rock and moving acoustic ballads. It's the very sprawling quality that makes the album work so well. Yes, there will be some tracks that are better than others but, surprisingly, even the weaker tracks here work well when integrated with the great songs on the album
Disillusioned by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi after the Beatles spent time with him in India in February 1968, Lennon penned this scathing kiss-off to the religious guru. The lyrical barbs are sharp, but the ambling ivories and backup la-la-la's fail to match the punch of the lyrics. Still, it has an alluring bitterness that sticks with you. 23. "Yer Blues". The plodding "Yer Blues" demonstrates that the Beatles didn't excel at composing blues tunes. But this one benefits from a searing, muddy guitar solo at the song's end.
