Jacques Brel released no new studio album between 1959 and 1963, instead wrapping up his Phillips label contract with the quintessential Paris Olympia live album. He was not idle during this period, however. Several EPs appeared, while he also contributed to two movie soundtracks, La Belgique Vue De Ciel and Un Roi Sans Divertissement. Some of this material, which was recorded for Phillips, has been floating around on such compilations as the French Ne Me Quitte Pas and La Valse a Mille Temps, and the American Poetic World of Jacques Brel. 1959's Les Flamandes is included here as overflow from Barclay's CD reissue of his third and fourth LPs, La Valse a Mille Tempts. Familiar from its appearance (as "Marathon") in the stage play Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris, it's a deliciously jaunty song - a wryly affectionate look at the leisure activities of the Belgian peasantry.

Jacques Brel’s unshakable faith in his own abilities served him well when all around him were equivocal. Stuck, bored and unfulfilled at the family’s cardboard factory back in Brussels, 24-year-old Brel fled for Paris in September 1953, leaving his wife and young family in Belgium, a temporary arrangement that would remain permanent but for one abortive attempt to relocate them. Eyebrows were raised in 1959 when he released the barnstorming Les Flamandes, a rather ribald and derisive music hall number about dancing Flemish women. Brel was unrepentant, and on his final 1977 album, when at death’s door, he upped the ante with an even ruder song, Les . which accuses the Flemish of having standoffish stares and gormless humour, as well as being Nazis during the war, and Catholics in between.

La Valse à Mille Temps (English: The Waltz With A Thousand Beats) is Jacques Brel's fourth album. Also known as Jacques Brel 4 and American Début, the album was released in 1959 by Philips. The album was reissued on 23 September 2003 under the title La Valse à Mille Temps as part of the 16-CD box set Boîte à Bonbons by Barclay (980 816-6). Jacques Brel – composer, vocals. François Rauber – orchestra conductor. Jean-Marie Guérin – mastering. J. Aubert – photography. M. Apelbaum – photography.
