DOWNLOAD ALBUM. Over the course of eight original compositions, the constituents of the album Étoilée, American bassist/composer Joe Martin offers us interesting musical moments. He is featured in a smashing quartet with saxist Mark Turner, keyboardist Kevin Hays, and drummer Nasheet Waits. The two strongest pieces appear right at the top of the album’s lineup. A World Beyond is subjected to a softly keened instrumentation, kicking in with a temperate bass groove and producing an unexpected polyphony in the head as Hays’ Fender Rhodes brings out an alternative melodic thread in the shape of comping.

Joe Martin – ‘Étoilée’ (2019). toilée is named after Joe Martin’s daughter’s middle name, which is a signal that the music contained within is personally inspired. Reaching within his household for inspiration, Martin takes a rare turn as a leader but making it count like he did the last time. His last outing was start-studded but Étoilée is, too: joining Martin is Nasheet Waits on drums, Kevin Hays on keyboards and Mark Turner on saxophones, but with all songs composed by him and the sessions under his direction, this is one man’s artistic vision. Martin’s presence is felt implicitly but unmistakably on A World Beyond just in the sophisticated way he forms a connection between Waits’ restless rhythms and Hays’ Fender Rhodes. That leaves Turner to lead the melody with much leeway.

Joe Martin – Étoilée (Sunnyside Records). This is one of those recordings that speaks with a soft voice, but carries as if shouted from the rooftops. The key is how the quartet of bassist Joe Martin, saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Kevin Hays and drummer Nasheet Waits boost the resonance of a gently stated melody. Saxophone, piano, drums, some effects are the ingredients used to form all kinds of cohesion between the musicians. Sometimes the music has a little hop to it, sometimes it sighs contentedly, sometimes it skips briskly like a stone across the water, and sometimes it drifts slowly like a thick fog. I can’t find anything online about this album.
