Complete your Damaged Bug collection. I love this album, but the colored vinyl doesn’t have much bass. The digital version has a much fuller sound. I haven’t heard a black vinyl version yet. Listen free to Damaged Bug – Cold Hot Plumbs (Exactly What You Think, What Cheer and more). John Dwyer has a surprise for u. hile we’ve all been eagerly anticipating the next Oh Sees record, he’s been tirelessly working in his synth laboratory as Damaged Bug and has hand-crafted a followup to last year’s neon-noir Hubba Bubba that shakes up the snow globe considerably
It may be a side project but Dwyer really put all his formidable talents into Cold Hot Plumbs.
Cold Hot Plumbs, which builds on last year’s Hubba Bubba, is fueled by fuzzy synths rather than slashing guitars, making the album sound more like a long-lost record from The Unicorns than Thee Oh Sees. For worried Thee Oh Sees fans, though, the recognizable Dwyer trademarks - the whisper-singing, the lo-fi production, the ceaseless rush of extraneous noises that buzz at random times - are still present on Cold Hot Plumbs, despite the fundamental instrument swap. Nonetheless, it’s a quintessential Dwyer release: fun, quirky, and full of remarkably solid songs that do his gargantuan catalogue justice.
Genre: Neo-Psychedelia. This album starts out with some of the best psychedelic pop I've heard in years. Imagine if The Beatles rejected the Sgt. Pepper project from the get-go and then McCartney skulked off to his home studio in Scotland to make the record himself. The latter part of the album picks up the pace and washes over you until your mind is swimming with sonic creatures from the deep. Or consider a donation? End of year lists.
