Go 2 is the second studio album by the English band XTC, released on 6 October 1978. The United Kingdom version contained no singles, but the American and Canadian versions included the single "Are You Receiving Me?" (released 27 October 1978, the same month as the album's release). A promotional video was also made for the song. An earlier version of "Are You Receiving Me?" was recorded during the Go 2 sessions and was later released on the Coat of Many Cupboards box-set

In typical second album fashion, Go 2 is more rushed and less considered than their assured debut and all that followed. Album tracks Beatown and Jumping In Gommorah attempt to mimic the energy harnessed on their debut, but ultimately lack the power of what came before. The third double album in XTC’s career nearly didn’t happen – only a reshuffle at their record label would finally get it off the ground. In retrospect, this was perhaps the writing on the wall for their relationship with Virgin Records, and after this album the band would go on a creative strike which lasted another seven years. Nonsuch is packed with ideas and, as such, it lacks the immediacy of some of their previous albums, but it does reward repeated listening.

Of all the bands that emerged from the British post-punk scene, XTC has been one of the hardest to pin down. You could peg them as an ’80s dinosaur whose most recognizable tracks pop up on cut-rate compilations of new wave or classic alternative rock. Or they could slot into an adult alternative playlist, to be heard between semi-hits by Natalie Merchant and Suzanne Vega on a Pandora playlist. Or they could simply be relegated to the bargain bin of your local used CD shop, copies of their later albums collecting dust next to a dozen copies of . All of those categorizations are.

This album is dense, damaged, furious, inspiring (technically, musically, perhaps even politically), and it’s a damn fine argument for rock as transcendental experience. It’s a double-album by a hardcore band that specialized in one-minute funk-punk blasts. That adds up to a lot of songs-over 40 of ’em-and few are less than fantastic. The first 10 tracks are the disjointed warm-up; the middle locks together to make one of the greatest one-sided conversations you’ll ever have; the end peters out, exhausted. Of all the words I might use to describe XTC, warm didn’t really become applicable until the band realized it was okay to like Burt Bacharach. However, on Skylarking, they had the adjective thrust upon them by alpha-producer Todd Rundgren.
