Salonen was principal conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1995. He co-founded the Baltic Sea Festival in 2003 with Michael Tydén and Valery Gergiev. Esa-Pekka Salonen is a very thoughtful Sibelius conductor. I was eager to find out how well he handled Nielsen and the results exceeded my expectations. He is a fine Nielsen conductor, much better than Blomstedt or Schonwandt (who bores me to death). He's competing heavily with Bernstein, who he doesn't manage to top here, but overall Salonen is a very competent interpreter of these neglected works. This set is one of the largest Nielsen sets I've seen (6 discs in all). Disc 4: Symphony No. 4 "The Inextinguishable" Helios Overture. Disc 5: Symphony No. 5 Masquerade (excerpts) Esa-Pekka Salonen remains on of the day's most astute conductors of the Scandinavian composers - not surprising since he hails from Finland. But it more than an affinity for the spaciousness of that region of the world that imbues the works of Sibelius, Nielsen, Kaija Saariaho, Aulis Sallinen, etc.
