Album · 1996 · 12 Songs. A true power-pop gem, One Chord to Another showcases Sloan's ability to meld melodic songcraft with scrappy punk energy for a dozen breathless tracks. From the lo-fi chaos of "The Good in Everyone" and the shaggy rocker "D Turns to G," to the gentle strum and handclaps of "The Lines You Amend," to the tart trumpet blasts of "Everything You've Done Wrong," these cuts sparkle with crisp guitar hooks and clever lyrics. Sloan's four singer/songwriters are all at the top of their game here. One Chord to Another Sloan.

One Chord to Another was Sloan's first album to be released in Japan. They secured a distribution deal with EMI, who released the album with new recordings of "Stood Up" and "Same Old Flame". When Navy Blues was released in Canada, however, Sloan's distribution deal with Universal Canada led to new Japanese distribution with Universal Japan. Universal then released Sloan's first three albums in Japan

On the group's previous album, Sloan had refashioned itself as a power pop band, often with terrific results, but on One Chord to Another the songwriting blossoms. Filled with catchy, jangling riffs and memorable melodies, the record is a tour de force of hooks and harmonies, filled with exceptionally strong songs and forceful performances, which give the record a firm, rocking foundation. Few power pop records of the '90s are as infectious and memorable as One Chord to Another.

One Chord To Another" isn't bad, but it certainly isn't rock greatness. It is, however, a bridge between eras for Canada's Fab Four. With all of the brash, lyrically playful songwriting of their early years, and the warm Lo-fi production of their recent efforts, this is an album of a band realizing it's capabilities and desires. The only weakness I can find with this album is that as a band, Sloan doesn't sound too integrated. One Chord to Another" was recorded amidst breakup rumours of the band, and it shows in the music - the osngs tend to feel more like "solo" projects than "band" projects. This is but a small, small concern, however. Overall, this is a fabulous album, and certainly ranks, along with "Twice Rmeoved" as Sloan's best.

Sloan is a Canadian, Toronto-based rock band originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sloan has released twelve full-length albums, two EPs, a live album, a greatest hits album and more than 30 singles. The band has received nine Juno Award nominations, winning one. The band is known for their sharing of songwriting and lead vocals from each member of the group and their unaltered line-up throughout their career.
