Janis Ian is one of the reputed American singers and songwriters of the 20th century. She is also a columnist and science fiction author. Following her debutant hit, she came up with three more albums simultaneously, ‘For All the Seasons of Your Mind’, ‘The Secret Life of J Eddy Fink’ and Who Really Cares’ in 1967, 1968 and 1969 respectively. She distributed the profits from the album to her friends and in charities. At the age of 20, she announced her retirement from the music industry. The album contained the song, ‘Jesse’ which went on to become a Top 30 hit. 1975 proved to be a breakthrough year in her career as it witnessed the release of the album, ‘Between the Lines’. The album surpassed all her previous records to emerge as the most successful album of her career gaining a platinum status at the box office. It reached the number 1 status on Billboard's Album chart.

Janis is a collection of performances by Janis Joplin, issued in 1975 as a compilation album containing film soundtrack and live recordings. Disc one is subtitled "From the soundtrack of the motion picture Janis (with substituted performances of 'Piece of my Heart' and 'Cry Baby')". In addition to concert recordings from Toronto and Frankfurt, there are several short TV-interviews. Joplin then left the band after a Family Dog benefit gig in December 1968 and formed a back-up group, the Kozmic Blues Band, releasing an album in September 1969. The group disbanded three months later, with Joplin again suffering from her addictions. After taking time out in Brazil with friend Linda Gravenites, who was her costume designer and praised by Joplin in the May 1968 issue of Vogue, Joplin returned to America and formed the Full Tilt Boogie Band, which began touring in May 1970.
