The program notes reminded me that the Piano Quintet, written when Brahms was 29, ends a youthful string of fresh, energetic chamber works like the first piano trio, the first string sextet, and the first two piano quartets. The spirit of all this music can be contrasted with the melancholy and inwardness of later works like the Clarinet Quintet and the two viola sonatas

The Alban Berg Quartett was a string quartet founded in Vienna, Austria in 1970, named after Alban Berg. The Berg Quartet was founded in 1970 by four young professors of the Vienna Academy of Music, and made its debut in the Vienna Konzerthaus in autumn 1971. The widow of the composer Alban Berg, Helene, attended an early private concert after which she gave her consent for the quartet to use her husband's name.

Brahms's string quartets are among the composer's most "difficult" works, and they take a bit of effort to get to terms with. It has been said that inside them there are symphonies struggling to emerge, and to some extent one does get the feeling that Brahms was less than fully comfortable with the medium, that it provided restrictions more than opportunities and that the music is too large-scale in feel for the intimacy of chamber music. That said, there is no doubt about his compositional mastery or level of inspiration - that I have a hard time imagining anyone counting.
