The two albums Juliana Hatfield released individually in the spring of 2000 - Beautiful Creature and Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure - were also released as a set, containing both records. For the true fan - and anyone following Hatfield in 2000 is - this the smarter, more economical purchase, although it puts the flaws of Total System Failure in sharper relief. Track Listing - Disc 1. If Beautiful Creature captured Juliana Hatfield at the peak of her powers, its companion piece Total System Failure - a band effort by her latest power trio, Juliana's Pony - is its polar opposite. Messy, noisy, directionless, and painfully shy on both tunes and purpose, it's the sonic representation of Hatfield's id unleashed. This is not an isolated example, just the most egregious misstep on an album full of them. Arriving at the same time as the lovely, measured Beautiful Creature, Total System Failure is a reminder why Hatfield never became the star some predicted she would be at the height of alterna-mania in 1993: her desire to rock undercuts the very gifts that make her tuneful, ringing guitar pop appealing. This time around, it's rather fortunate that she divided the two parts of her personality between two records

Hey Babe by Juliana Hatfield Audio CD £3. 7. Sent from and sold by Smaller World Future. Only Everything by Juliana Hatfield Audio CD £1. 5. Released at the same time as her "Beautiful Creature" album, this disc finds Juliana purging herself of some harder-edged material, both musically and lyrically. While this terrain is nothing new for her (she's spit out seething rock numbers before, such as "Down On Me," "Give Me Some of That," "A Dame With A Rod," and "Rider"), she's never dwelled on it for the length of an entire album. On Total System Failure Juliana opted for sadly obvious seething found on albums like Veruca Salt's Resolver. Actually, now that I put front this often abused comparison between the two I realize that Pony sounds a lot like Veruca Salt's American Thighs era, although Total System Failure is much more grinding.

Juliana's Pony: Total System Failure. It’s easily the weakest album in her career and sounds even worse when compared to the subtle path of Beautiful Creature.

After Juliana Hatfield disbanded the jangle pop trio the Blake Babies in 1990, she launched a solo career, performing similarly melodic indie guitar pop. Singing in an endearingly thin voice, Hatfield married her ringing hooks to sweet, lovelorn pop and startlingly honest confessional songs. Spring 2000 was a busy time for Hatfield; she released the quiet, reflective solo album Beautiful Creature and Total System Failure, a collection of louder, poppier material, on the same day. Total System Failure featured Hatfield, former Weezer bassist Mike Welsh, and drummer Zephan Courtney as a new band, Juliana's Pony, which was a trio along the lines of the Juliana Hatfield Three. Hatfield's next project was a return to one of her first: she reunited with Freda Love and John Strohm in 2000, launching a Blake Babies tour and recording an album entitled God Bless the Blake Babies.
