The Very Best of Rainbow is a greatest hits compilation album by the British hard rock band Rainbow. It features material ranging from 1975's Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow to their 1983 release, Bent Out of Shape. The front cover comes from the inside of the first Rainbow album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and is actually a picture of Ritchie Blackmore playing with his previous band, Deep Purple.

The Best of Rainbow is the first compilation album from British hard rock group Rainbow, released in 1981. It featured only previously-released studio cuts, taken from the five studio LPs released at that point.

The Best of Rainbow compiles 16 of the best tracks from Rainbow's first seven studio albums, wisely avoiding 1977's live On Stage release. The first two tracks from their debut album, 1975's Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, showcases the instant bond that was formed between Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio, especially on "Man on the Silver Mountain. With Dio leaving in 1978, Graham Bonnet filled in on vocals for Down to Earth, with Roger Glover playing bass. Although the album gave the band a number 40 hit with "Since You've Been Gone," one of Russ Ballard's creations, Bonnet left thereafter and was replaced by Joe Lynn Turner for the Difficult to Cure album. The album sold on the strength of "I Surrender," one of their best tracks, but the remaining tunes marked the beginning of Rainbow's recession.

If nothing else, The Best of Rainbow is loaded with the kind of mind-bending solos that earned Blackmore and Rainbow their stripes. Overall, this is a very good album. About half the songs I really like, the other half are new or so-so, but this is typical for me, even for a best of or greatest hits collection. Before I bought this CD, I knew the popular hits, . Man on the Silver Mountain, but I found some other songs that I like that I hadn’t really heard of, . When I listen to this CD, I skip a few tracks, but really enjoy many of them, including a few new songs that I have added to my rotation.
