The New Lost City Ramblers. The founding members of the Ramblers, or NLCR, were Mike Seeger (August 15, 1933 – August 7, 2009), John Cohen, and Tom Paley (March 19, 1928 – September 30, 2017). Tom Paley later left the group and was replaced by Tracy Schwarz. The New Lost City Ramblers not only directly participated in the old-time music revival, but have continued to directly influence countless musicians who have followed.

The New Lost City Ramblers, or NLCR, is a contemporary old-time string band that formed in New York City in 1958 during the Folk Revival. Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley were its founding members. Tracy Schwarz replaced Paley, who left the group in 1962. Seeger died of cancer in 2009, and Paley died in 2017. NLCR participated in the old-time music revival, and continued to directly influence many later musicians.

On New Lost City Ramblers-the first of a long string of full-lengths that the group would record for the Folkways imprint-John Cohen, Mike Seeger, and Tom Paley try their hand at 18 prewar tunes by outfits like The Dallas String Band, The North Carolina Ramblers, and The Skillet Lickers. Though Cohen, Seeger, and Paley were only in their mid-20s when they recorded this, their instrumental techniques were already formidable
