Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, and actor. Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine".

Artie Shaw - Greatest Hits by Artie Shaw. Artie Shaw was a reluctant bandleader, frequently leaving the music business for extended periods, often at the peak of his powers. Despite that, he was never at a loss for musical ideas, and he had an uncanny ability for assembling first-rate musicians, rehearsing them intently, and creating hit records. This CD is a good introduction to one of the swing era's greatest bands, though its concentration is squarely on hits, often meaning ballads and familiar songs  . The perfect gift for my nephew who is also an Artie Shaw aficionado. Big Band music of the forties from one of the greatest.

Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky in New York City) grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where his natural introversion was deepened by local antisemitism according to Shaw's autobiography. Shaw began learning the saxophone when he was 13 years old, and by the age of 16, he switched to the clarinet and left home to tour with a band. Returning to New York, he became a session musician through the early 1930s.
